A Parent's Award Choice
Born into slavery in 19th century America, Booker T. Washington proves that nothing can replace determination and work when it comes to gaining an education.
Imagine not being allowed to read because of your skin color. Based on a true story, this was a reality for 9-year-old Booker T. Washington.
Like most slaves who were freed after the Civil War, Booker found himself uprooted and illiterate. Facing an uncertain future and social adversity, Booker and his family pressed on to find work in a new town.
During hard times, Booker's passion for learning kept his dream to read alive. But putting food on the table was more important to Booker's stepfather than a fanciful dream -- until Booker's newly acquired math skills prevented his stepfather from being cheated by a greedy boss. By adhering to his dream, Booker inspired others in the African-American community.
